NTIP Teacher Responsibilities

All beginning teachers in Ontario are required to successfully complete NTIP. It is provided as a support to you in these crucial first years, and can help plant the seeds of life-long learning and reflexive, collaborative practice.

What is NTIP?

The New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) is the second job-embedded step along a continuum of professional learning for new teachers, building on and complementing the first step: initial teacher education programs. It provides professional support to help new teachers develop the requisite skills and knowledge to be effective as teachers in Ontario. The four core goals of NTIP are explained below from the perspective of a new teacher:

Confidence: I can do it…I have the supports to be a successful teacher

Efficacy: My teaching makes a difference in the lives and learning of every single student

Instructional Practice: I am able to respond to the diverse learning needs of my students with an array of effective instructional strategies

Commitment to Continuous Learning: I want to continue learning and growing as a professional in collaboration with my students, colleagues, administration, parents/guardians, and school community

What do I need to do?

All NTIP teachers must:

  • Begin and continually reflect on the Strategy Form by reviewing, editing, and adding goals and stratgeies, in consultation with your NTIP Team, mentor(s), and principal (more info below)
  • Review the Orientation slides below
  • Attend mandatory NTIP Orientation (this will occur in Oct/Nov, but if you were hired later than that, we will offer more dates throughout the year)
Continually check in with your NTIP Team, mentor, and principal when needed
  • Take advantage of the resources available to you through NTIP for your own professional development, as well as resources for lesson/unit ideas in various subjects

Orientation, Memos, & General Info

Please review this document and the Orientation slides below prior to our first NTIP Orientation session.

We will review the proceeding memos and ministry documents during our Orientation session, but you are welcome to review on your own.

Orientation Overview

The Orientation slides above serve as a basic overview of documents, timelines, and other information needed for the year. They will be gone over in detail during our Orientation sessions.

Orientation Dates

All beginning of the year Orientations have now taken place. They were finished on Nov 12.

If you are joining NTIP after that date, it’s okay! Review slides above to familiarize yourself with the program. As more people join, Matt will also offer Orientations in the future. You can be released for a half-day to attend.

Individual NTIP Strategy Form

Every beginning teacher must complete this form throughout their time in NTIP. Your Mentor and Principal will make recommendations along the way and provide suggestions, ideas, and support to complete your goals/strategies.

Each year, every teacher must complete an Annual Learning Plan (ALP). While in NTIP, the Strategy Form can serve as your ALP. However, if your Principal asks you to use MVAL (the program we usually use for our ALPs), you must do that in addition to the Strategy Form.

At the end of your teaching assignment (LTO) or first year permanent, this form must be signed by your Principal. This means that the form must be a point of conversation between you and your Principal before the end of the teaching assignment/year.

Click here for your copy of the Strategy Form.

Click here for more tips on completing the Form.

Note: this will prompt you to “Make a Copy” of the document. Please do that, and it will automatically save to your Google Drive. Keep it somewhere memorable and add your name to the title. You can then share it with your Principal(s) and Mentor(s) if you wish (it’s a VERY easy way to connect and reflect on your development!).

Permanent Teachers: After signing, your principal will submit the form along with your Teacher Performance Appraisal documents to HR. A copy is then sent to OCT as proof that you have successfully completed NTIP, as it is a requirement of your first year permanent.

LTO Teachers: After signing, you keep this form for your own records. It serves as proof of growth and development to Principals in further interviews, as well as for your own record of professional development.

Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) – Permanent Teachers Only

To begin, review steps to NTIP TPA’s and the TPA quick rundown to familiarize yourself with the process. Your principal also has this info and will review it with you.

More detailed information can be found in the WCDSB NTIP Core Competencies Memo APS045 , also located on the Beginning Teachers page of the WCDSB NTIP site.

Below are the flow charts explaining what occurs with successful TPAs, or if a principal feels you need further development.
