NTIP Principal Responsibilities
NTIP Teachers are:
- Teachers hired to their first LTO (80+ days) – must complete LTO evaluation and Strategy Form
- Teachers in their first year permanent – must complete 2 consecutive successful TPAs and Strategy Form (gets submitted with TPA documents)
- Teachers not needing an evaluation, but are in their first 5 years of teaching and require additional supports through NTIP (resources, mentoring, etc.)
The first 2 groups of teachers should be identified by HR, who will send you their names and further information regarding evaluations/appraisals. The latter can be referred to the NTIP Consultant by you.
What to do first?
Refer to page 19 of the NTIP Manual (2018). It outlines the the role of the principal and how you can best support NTIP teachers and mentors.
Provide orientation (Elementary & Secondary ) to the school and connect your NTIP teacher with mentors within the building.
NTIP teachers will be provided mentoring through NTIP Teams, but formal or informal mentorship within your schools is valuable and necessary to the development of your NTIP teacher. Please connect your NTIP teachers to experienced, knowledgeable, and reflexive staff who can also provide guidance and support.
Next, you must review the NTIP Individual Strategy Form and TPA/LTO Evaluation process with your NTIP teacher (more info below).

Nominate a Mentor!
Do you know a teacher looking for leadership opportunities? Do they possess the qualities of a life-long learner? Are they personable, trusting, open to new ideas, and always working to better themselves and community?
Assuming you said yes to everything, you should nominate them to be an NTIP Mentor!

NTIP Individual Strategy Form
Every beginning teacher must complete this form throughout their time in NTIP. Mentors and Principal will make recommendations along the way and provide suggestions, ideas, and support to complete your goals/strategies.
Each year, every teacher must complete an Annual Learning Plan (ALP). While in NTIP, the Strategy Form can serve as an ALP. However, principals may asks NTIP teachers to use MVAL (the program we usually use for our ALPs), meaning NTIP teachers will have to use MVAL in addition to the Strategy Form.
If you believe that your NTIP teacher has worked towards meeting the goals set out on their Strategy Form at the end of their teaching assignment (LTO) or first year permanent, you will sign the end of the form. This means that the form must be a point of conversation between you and your NTIP teacher at multiple points before the end of the teaching assignment/year.
Click here for your copy of the Strategy Form.
Click here for more tips on completing the Form.
Note: this will prompt you to “Make a Copy” of the document. Please do that, and it will automatically save to your Google Drive. Keep it somewhere memorable and add your name to the title. You can then share it with your Principal(s) and Mentor(s) if you wish (it’s a VERY easy way to connect and reflect on your development!).
Permanent Teachers: After signing, principals will submit the form along with the NTIP teachers’ Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) documents to HR. A copy is then sent to OCT as proof that the teacher has successfully completed NTIP, as it is a requirement of their first year permanent.
LTO Teachers: After signing, NTIP teachers keep this form for their own records. It serves as proof of growth and development in further interviews, as well as for their own record of professional development.
TPAs & LTO Evaluations
TPA for Permanent Teachers
HR will send the names of teachers needing their 1st, 2nd, or both TPAs, as well as documents/programs needed to complete the appraisal.

LTO Evaluation
HR will send the names of teachers needing their LTO Evaluation, as well as documents/programs needed to complete the evaluation. LTO Evaluations are not a part of NTIP. However, we do support LTO Teachers as they simultaneously go through the evaluation.
